A great way to drastically increase download speeds., Easy and simple

Theres a wonderful tool out there called cablenut.

Basically all cablenut does is set paraeters for your internet in your registry. If used correctly you can greatly increase your download speeds.

Heres how you do it:

1. go to cablenut.com and dowload your free copy of cablenut

2. Once cablenut is installed and downloaded navigate to the directory you installed it in.

3. Open the folder called css

4. Find your way of accessing the internet
56=dialup(sbc....etc)
satellite=satellite internet (sbc....etc)
cable=cable internet (comcast, sbc.....etc)
adsl=dsl (sbc...comcast...etc)

5. Once you click on the folder you will see a couple of executable files, this part is important. Now click on the folder of your operating system with the word fast in it.

For example im running windows xp, sbc yahoo dsl, so id choose adsl_fast_2k
Someone running 56k dialup, on windows 98 would choose 56K_9x

6. After you double click your file, the cablenut adjuster will open up with the values of your specified speed filled in. All you need to do is click save to registry at the bottom left, then exit after that.

7. Reboot your computer

After you reboot you will expirience the joy of drastically improved download speeds.

1. How to speed up a slow computer:

first off in the bottom right hand corner of your computer if you see alot of icons start up there when you first start your computer then this is for you if you dont know already how to get rid of em.

Press your Start Button (bottom left) and go to "run"
now type in: msconfig
now you will get a box that pops up and will tell you bunch of stuff dont mess with anything else other than what I tell you otherwise you could do something really bad (possible) go to your "startup" tab on the top right of the screen where it usually is and click it.

Now you will have a closed in box with bunch of filenames n addresses and more boxes with checks in them. Now if your like me you dont want anything startin up when you start you computer up or while your even doing anything cause it slows you down. Now unless your like me right now 1 have 1 thing starting up when my computer starts up and thats my settin for my overclocked vid card. But other than that uncheck every box and then hit apply and ok. Then window you were jus in will now close and ask you if you want to restart or wait till later to restart.

Either way when you shut it off and then turn it back on the settins will kick in

Xp Professional Reboot, F5 not F8

After multiple attempts to re-boot using thr F8 key, I learnt that for XP Professional, it's actually the F5 key that you have to tap repeatedly.

Pc Performance, Tips and tricks for speeding up PC Performance

I think we need a thread to discuss tips/tricks for PC Performance.

Other than virus/spyware scans and adding more memory, what have you found to increase system performance on windows 2000 and XP systems?

I have found a couple of things to provide a temporary fix, but, unfortunately, I don't know enough about the OSs to tell you why these fixes work.

Some of the things that have worked for me:

Get rid of seldom used programs. This is easy enough to do through the "add/remove programs" menu.

Defrag, clean out temp files, and do just about everything else you find in Start -> Programs(or All Programs) -> Accessories -> System tools

Reset some of the services on your machine to a startup type of "manual" rather than Automatic. Do this by going to Start -> Run -> services.msc.
Be carefull what you change. Google it first. You can reset some of the TSRs by going to the program itself and setting some flags in the application rather than in serices.msc. A couple of examples are Outlook and Messenger. You can reset both of these applications to not start automatically for a barely noticable gain in performance.

Before making changes you are unsure of, be sure to google or post to the forum for advice. Also, it's always a good idea to have a current backup of your system state as well as any data you have on your HD.

Best Utilities To Speed Up Slow Pc's

There can be many reasons for a "slow" computer. Your post is not specific.
Low-end CPU, insufficient memory(RAM), overfull or severely fragmented
local( C ) Disk, virus, spyware, and unnessary background Services all
contribute to the problem. If the "slowness" is internet related then the
speed of your connection, your browser settings, and DNS server all can
play a role. Rather than expecting some magical all-in-one application
to do it for you take this opportunity to investigate each of the above
categories to determine what you need for the way in which you use your
computer. These forums are a good starting place.

Do you have a clean-up utility?
Anti-Virus?
Anti-Spyware?
Firewall?
Do you defragment?
Do you know anything about XP Services?
Do you know how many programs start with Windows?
Can you control them?

Answers to all these questions will give you the ability to configure Windows
and your machine to your liking.

Shutdown Xp Really Fast!, Quicker than you can imagine!

The trick below lets you shut down XP really fast in just 1-2 seconds.To do this:
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to fire up the Task manager.
Keep Ctrl key pressed.
Now go to Shutdown>Turn Off in Task manager while keeping Ctrl key pressed all the time.
Just keep holding the Ctrl key down till XP suts down.Shouldn't take more than a second.
Note: This trick won't harm your PC in any way.It is certainly better than turning of the power button directly!!

When The Internet Seems Slower Than Molasses,, sometimes it *really* is!

On those days when the internet seems unbearably slow, and I know it's not malware or some other problem with my computer, I visit the Internet Traffic Report to see what's happening around the world.

Convenient, Quick Restart

Instead of going through the process of re-starting your whole computer, a quick way to "restart" your pc is by using task manager to end process "explorer.exe." The Icons and start bar will disappear, and you can start up "explorer.exe" again by going to "File" -> "New Task (Run...)" and typing in "explorer.exe." Note: This will not work for setting changes that require you to actually restart your PC.

Broadband speed test, Save it to your favorites

I find this a useful tool when things seem to be running a bit slow, once you get a benchmark for your connection it helps you to see if its your computer or if your connection that is slow. http://www.cnet.co.uk/misc/speedtest/ just click on start
